CPD requirements for nurses

What the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia's CPD registration standard asks of a nurse with general registration, and how VitalCPD keeps your records ready for an audit.

What the Board requires

  • At least 20 h of CPD each registration year (this one: 1 Jun 2026 – 31 May 2027).
  • Your records must show your learning needs, plan, participation and reflection.
  • If you're also a registered midwife, you need CPD for both. Activities relevant to both can count for both.

Endorsements and notations

  • Nurse practitioner: an extra 10 h, on prescribing and administration of medicines, diagnostic investigations, consultation and referral.
  • Scheduled medicines (registered nurse): an extra 10 h, on obtaining, supplying and administering scheduled medicines.
  • Scheduled medicines: designated registered nurse prescriber: an extra 10 h, related to prescribing of scheduled medicines.

Registered part-way through the year? Your hours may be less (pro-rata). Work out your own hours.
